Parent Meeting to Discuss MA’s Transformation to Student-centered Learning

September 8, 2011

Dear Parents and Guardians,

RE: Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Monmouth Academy gymnasium

The school year is off to a great beginning at Monmouth Academy.  Unfortunately, we were not able to host the “Freshmen First Day” due to Irene, but we adjusted our first day of school to assist our freshmen in their transition.  The first two days of the school year were spent working on developing MA’s shared vision, creating a school-wide Code of Cooperation, providing team building activities, and informing and answering our students questions in regards to our continued transformation to a “learner-centered” school.

The vision of RSU #2 is to be a system of student-centered learning.  And, as you may have heard from your son or daughter, Monmouth Academy is transitioning to a proficiency-based educational system (as all schools in the RSU).  While change often comes with anxiety, we believe our transformation to a learner-centered system is beneficial to each of our learners.

One of the biggest changes accompanying our transformation involves how we measure and report student progress.  In brief, a student’s progress will be evaluated by his/her performance on specific measurement topics (that describe essential skills and knowledge) related to a content standard.  For example, in English a measurement topic may state:  “Understands multiple central ideas in the same text and how they interact and build on each other”.  Students will then have different ways to provide evidence that they are actually proficient with the topic.

Beginning this fall, unlike a traditional grading system (0-100), student progress will be reported on 0-4 performance levels.  These are two completely different reporting systems, so one should not try to equate a “100” to a “4”.  A description of the 0-4 performance levels is listed on the back of this letter.

We anticipate that you may have questions regarding how this reporting system will affect your son or daughter.  Therefore, we are having a parent meeting on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Monmouth Academy gymnasium.  Questions such as how this reporting system will affect class rank, college transcripts, honor roll, eligibility, will be answered at this meeting.  More importantly, we will share information on “why” our school is transforming to a learner-centered proficiency-based system.  Mr. Hammonds, our new Superintendent, teachers, and students will be presenting information and answering questions.

Sincerely,

Richard “Rick” A. Amero, Jr.
Principal

August, 2011, Welcome Back Letter

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with a great excitement that I welcome you to Monmouth Academy.  With the start of the school year rapidly approaching, the intent of this letter is to provide you with details regarding the upcoming school year.

As you may have heard, we have three new members of our faculty this year.  Mr. Lucas Turner is our new athletic director at Monmouth Academy and Monmouth Middle School.  In addition, Mr. Turner will be teaching consumerism and economics.  Mr. Dan Weeks will be joining us as a math teacher.  And, Susan Poole will serve as an educational technician.  We are excited to welcome all three to the MA team!

On a personal note, it is with tremendous pride to inform you that I will be serving as Monmouth Academy’s principal.  As an alumnus of MA, and a teacher, coach, and advisor for the past twenty-two years, I look forward to working with the many stakeholders to continue Monmouth Academy’s wonderful tradition as one of the best high schools in the State.

Our first day of school for 9th grade students will be on Wednesday, August 31.  The purpose of this day is to provide our freshmen an opportunity to get acquainted with the faculty, staff, and administration.  In addition, they will follow an abbreviated schedule, meet with their specific course teachers, participate in small group seminars, and enjoy team-building activities.

On Thursday, September 1, we will welcome all 235 students in grades 9-12.  This will mark the 208th opening day for Monmouth Academy!  Our faculty is busy preparing activities to assist our learners to actively engage in our learning community.  Our learners will participate in team-building activities, examine our shared vision, develop our MA Code of Cooperation, and have an opportunity to discuss their questions, concerns, and goals for the upcoming year.  This thoughtful process is designed for our students to understand and experience, on a meaningful level, what a learner-centered school entails.

Once again, on the first day of school, your son and/or daughter will bring home a great deal of information (Emergency, Health Insurance, Student Computer and Internet Use, Free/Reduced Lunch forms, etc.).  It is imperative that all the forms (with the exception of the optional Free/reduced Lunch, Tooth Angels, and the NCLB release of information forms) are filled out completely, signed, and returned your son/daughter’s homeroom teacher by Thursday, September 8.

Once again this fall, MA will continue its tradition of providing unique comprehensive weeklong programs for all of our learners during the week of September 19.  Freshmen will participate in MOBY (My Own Back Yard) held in Bar Harbor, while our Sophomores will engage in Sophomore Awareness held at Camp Androscoggin in Wayne (non-overnight).  Juniors will take part in the Junior Leadership Week held at Camp Mechuwana in Winthrop and our Seniors will participate in Senior Seminar (both on campus and trips to Maine colleges and universities).  Finally, on Friday, September 23, students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade will partner with the United Way and the Monmouth community with its annual “Day of Caring”.  More specific details regarding this exciting “big week” will be provided in the coming weeks.

In conclusion, on behalf of the MA staff, we look forward to working in partnership with you to provide the best education for your son and/or daughter.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us throughout the school year.

Sincerely,

Richard A. Amero, Jr.
Principal
